Bad breath is experienced by most people at some time. It may simply be “morning breath” but can be a persistent chronic condition which affects a person’s everyday life and confidence. It is almost always caused initially by poor oral hygiene leading to a buildup of excess bacteria in the mouth and which gives off smelly gases. So, on the contrary to the popular belief, the following does not usually contribute towards the problem of halitosis: constipation, tonsils, gastrointestinal problems and food or beverages consumed (temporary bad breath is caused by foods like garlic and onions. And generally only lasts from 24 to 72 hours). NB: In Lebanon and the Middle East, we have a lot of garlic and onion use in our food.
Persistent problems with bad breath are often associated with gum disease (also known as gingivitis) as people who suffer from gum disease have four times the chance of suffering from bad breath or halitosis. Gum disease may also lead to receding gums.
Gum Disease (Gingivitis)
This is a superficial infection of the gum tissue which does not yet effect the underlying bone. The gums may have some or all of the following signs:
1. Redness and puffiness
2. Bleeding when brushed or flossed
3. Bad odor
Reason for Bad Breath
Is the treatment for bad breath permanent?
Receeding Gums (Peridontitis)
The root of the tooth can become visible due to shrinking of the gums away from the crown. This is caused by periodontal disease and makes the teeth look longer and feel more sensitive to hot or cold and very often affects the patients’ every waking moment.
Once you discover the source of the problem, there are a number of ways to keep your mouth free of unpleasant odors.
Carefully brushing at least two to three times a day, flossing daily, and rinsing your mouth vigorously to remove any loose food is essential. However, research has found that simply keeping teeth clean is not enough to eliminate oral malodor.
Tongue deplaquing with tongue scrapers tools exclusively designed for the use on the tongue is as essential for fresh breath as regular brushing. Tongue scrapers provide even pressure that forces bacteria, food debris, and dead cells from the pits and crevices in the tongue that a toothbrush cannot remove.
